Use-By: Expiry Tracker (“the app”) helps you record the expiry dates of food and other things at home (medicine, vouchers, loyalty points, SIM plans, documents…) and reminds you before they expire. It also keeps track of belongings that don’t expire and where things are kept. It is designed so that the developer does not collect and cannot see your data.
What the app stores
Item names, categories, quantities, units, expiry dates (or “No expiry”), places (such as “fridge” or “garage”), notes, usage history (including which list an item was moved from).
The value you record for a voucher, loyalty points or a SIM: an amount of money or points, with its currency or “points”.
Photos you add to items (one per item) and a small thumbnail of each. Photos are resized on your device, and all information attached to the image, including where it was taken (GPS, EXIF), is removed before saving.
The name or nickname you enter, shown next to items you add or use in shared lists. When you invite someone, this name is included in the invitation so they know who invited them.
Reminder settings (reminder time), stored on your device.
Where data is stored
On your iPhone, and in your own iCloud account (Apple CloudKit) to sync between your devices. The developer has no access to your iCloud.
Item names, notes, places, list names, the names of people who added items and the amounts or points you record are encrypted on iCloud servers with keys belonging to your account.
Photos are stored in the iCloud of the list owner (the person who created the list the item is in) and count toward that person’s iCloud storage: your own iCloud for your lists, the other person’s iCloud for a list they share with you. Photos and thumbnails may not be end-to-end encrypted like the information above: they are still protected by iCloud’s standard data protection (encrypted in transit and at rest on Apple’s servers), but the keys may be managed by Apple. If that matters to you, don’t photograph documents that contain sensitive information.
When you share a list with someone, you choose for each person whether they can edit or only view it. They see everything in that list, including places and photos, and the names of people who added or used items. You can stop sharing or remove people at any time.
What the app does not do
No separate account, no sign-in beyond iCloud.
No ads, no tracking, no third-party analytics or data-collection tools.
No selling or sharing of data with anyone.
Category suggestions while you type an item name run on your device: they use the items already in your lists, a keyword table built into the app and, on devices with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s on-device language model. Item names are not sent to the developer or to any server.
Camera and photo library
The app uses the camera only when you tap Take Photo to photograph an item. When you choose a photo from your library, iOS gives the app only the photo you pick; the app cannot see your photo library. Photos are not sent to the developer or to any server other than iCloud as described above.
Bug reports
When you tap Send bug report, the app opens a prefilled email to the developer containing the app and iOS versions, device model, iCloud and notification status, the number of lists and items, and recent technical error codes. The email contains no item names, notes or people’s names. You can review and edit it, and it is only sent when you tap Send.
It also includes your region, time zone and the app’s language, to tell whether a problem is related to date formats or a translation.
Data export
When you tap Settings → Export Data (CSV), the app creates a CSV file on your device with every item you can see: list name, item name, quantity, unit, expiry date, note, the name of who added it, the date added, category, value and place. The file contains no photos. The file only leaves your device when you choose where to send or save it, so think before sharing the file of a shared list.
Notifications
Reminder notifications are generated locally on your device and do not pass through the developer’s server.
Deleting data
Go to Settings → Delete all data to delete every list, item (including photos and places) and history entry on the device and in your iCloud (lists you share are also deleted for invitees). You can also delete individual items, individual lists, or delete the app. iCloud data can be removed in Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Storage.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from children.
